Roman Macaya serves as the Executive President of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, an institution that finances and provides universal public health care services in Costa Rica and manages the largest pension system of the country. Dr. Macaya has held this position since August 1, 2018. Prior to leading the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, Roman served as Costa Rica´s Ambassador to the United States of America, a post he held from August 20, 2014 through July 31, 2018. Roman has developed a multidisciplinary career as a scientist, businessman, advocate, politician, academic diplomat and public servant. His interests include new therapeutics, R&D, e-health, innovation, the challenges of caring for the elderly and science & health diplomacy. Roman holds an MBA in Health Care Management from the Wharton School of Business (University of Pennsylvania), a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UCLA and a B.A. in Chemistry from Middlebury College. He is married and has four children.
