Tribal Politics: Can We Bridge The Global Divide?

Brief

“Groupthink” is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for a conformity that appeases the group results in irrational decision-making. All people are susceptible to the notion of wanting to belong, to conform, and to be a part of something larger than them. In the political sphere, this results in viewing your political group as an extension of yourself. This can affect many aspects of political discourse as well as decision making due to the eventual disagreements that may result. Our true beliefs are worn away as they are replaced by what the larger group we belong to values, and the end result is an eventual descent into tribalism. A pseudo-tribalistic political arena presents many challenges, and Amy Chua is the specialist that can help us better understand how to overcome them.
