The Future of Global Water Security and Sustainability

Brief

H.E Saeed Mohammed Ahmed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, addressed Dubai’s roadmap to achieving water security in light of the region’s scarcity of natural water resources. During the opening address of the second day of the World Government Summit, Al Tayer outlined how water-related crises have been among the top five global risks in recent years in terms of its potentially devastating effect that water scarcity and security can have on the planet. Achieving water security, stressed Al Tayer, is a key cornerstone in ensuring the continuation of Dubai's and the wider regions’ success; however, the GCC has among the highest consumption of water in the world. This, said Al Tayer, is why water security is a matter of “national security” and has been outlined as one of the key sectors under the UAE Vision 2021.
