José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is a Spanish politician, who served twice as Prime Minister of Spain (2004-2008 and 2008-2011). President Zapatero’s main actions in Government focused on civic and social rights creation and extension. Internationally, he promoted the Alliance of Civilizations, now a UN initiative; sponsored the Debt for Education swaps and created the Water Fund for Latin America. In economic terms and after achieving during his first term the lowest level of unemployment in Spain since the Transition, President Zapatero’s actions focused on the international economic and financial crisis in Spain. He centered his efforts on the double objective of defending the solvency and autonomy of his country and preserving social cohesion in Spain. In this sense, he secured the permanent guest status for Spain in the G20. As the Spanish representative in the European Council, he participated in the adoption of decisive and pressing agreements to reinforce the economic union and guarantee the euro’s survival. During his mandates, President Zapatero also achieved the terrorist group ETA’s cease of terrorist activity in October 2011. He is now an Honorary Member of the International Commission against the Death Penalty, a member of the Club de Madrid and a patron of the World Sustainable Development Forum Patron. Currently he serves as President of the Foro de la Contratación Socialmente Responsable and patron of Fundación CERMI Mujeres.
