A Conversation with Elon Musk

Brief

Mr. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, is famous for innovations in the fields of space and automobiles. He said that his mission in life is to create long-term sustainable and efficient transport in order for mankind to become a space growing civilization that is part of a multi-planetary species.

Musk explained he is personally motivated to create; because he believes that life is more than just solving problems. Furthermore, he elaborated that life is about creating a sense of adventure and that is what he sets out to do through his projects. He explained how technology creates a sense of adventure through its unpredictability. He also explained how in our lifetime through the use of a $100-device one could video conference with anyone on earth. The ability to do something that people in our lifetime take for granted, would have been difficult to predict even in the recent past.

The speaker voiced his hopes for a future where people do not only live on Mars or Jupiter but have also travelled beyond to nearby galaxies. Additionally, he predicted that in the next ten years autonomy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) will have advanced to the point where it would be unusual to have a self-driven car. Nevertheless, the autonomous car will be the reason for mass unemployment within the transportation sector. However, he explained that his only fear is autonomous artificial intelligence will exceed the intelligence of “the smartest person on earth”. Musk went on to explain how he is currently working on a new tunnel system in Washington to solve congestion, the concept behind which is that it is easier to build 50 levels underground when it is not possible to do this above ground.

He advised the government on the future impacts of technology. Firstly, he urged governments to be aware of how their scientists are developing AI. Secondly, new ways to produce electricity need to be invented because the demand on electricity will triple due to the use of electric cars. Thirdly, robots will most probably perform most of the jobs existing today, thus a universal basic income needs to be created. Musk concluded his session by explaining that people will have to derive personal meaning outside of employment due to the future mass unemployment caused by AI.
