Should the world continue as is, a one-degree Celsius increase in temperatures will severely impact 14 percent of its population in heat waves. The figure rises to 47 percent in a two-degree Celsius scenario. In terms of water shortages, 350 million city dwellers will be affected should the temperature rise by one degree, while 411 million people will face problems should it become two degrees higher. Climate change has caused the highest number of major disasters in the world, and this has a human face. According to a study of 141 countries by the London School of Economics (LSE), more women than men died in those countries with a higher gender gap: for every man that dies, four women lose their life.
