With a double degree in Medicine and Pharmacy, Harald Schmidt pursues his vision to creatively destruct medicine and replace it by systems medicine. This entails a complete redefinition of what we call disease, how we diagnose it, treat it and finance the costs, not on input but on outcome. His research is funded by the European Research Council, the EU Horizon 2020 programme. He chairs the COST action OpenMultiMed contributing to the Big Data-based evolution of Medicine and is co-editor in chief of the journal Systems Medicine. His multi-national research experience in Academia and Industry has led to high impact publications (Hirsch 83) with high socio-economic relevance such as patents, biotech spin-offs and patient benefit.

With the pharmaceutical sector constantly growing, a major question of our era is: Why aren’t we healthier? Some say we are facing an opioid crisis of epic proportions with the overprescribtion of medications. Instead, Systems Medicine takes a holistic view that hopes to revolutionize the field by personalizing prescriptions and tailoring treatments to individuals, down to the cellular level, in lieu of the current frameworks of designing medicine for the “average” patient. Harald Schmidt is one of the leading experts in Systems Medicine and in this session he will discuss the viability and scalability of such a paradigm shift.
