The overview effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from space. It refers to the perception that Earth is a tiny, fragile ball of life, “hanging in the void”, shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere. From space, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide people become less important, and the need to create a positive impact to protect this “pale blue dot” becomes both obvious and imperative. Will Marshall brings the overview effect to businesses through showing them the world from an interconnected network of satellites spread all over the world. Using these satellite images, Marshall’s Planet Labs enables us to use geospatial data and analytics to advance various fields such as agriculture, energy, and the environment.
