The human brain is acutely sensitive to patterns. Our early ancestors recognized animals’ migration routes and plant life cycles which led to thriving communities. Detecting patterns in data continues to be one of the key drivers of decisionmaking, as policymakers rely on data for optimization and forecasting trends. Ben Wellington managed to combine data analysis with journalism, leading to high-impact stories that caused policy change. He sees patterns in data, then creates stories that plainly identify needs, beneficiaries, and recommendations.
