Sérgio Pimenta is IFC’s Vice President for the Middle East and Africa, in charge of all advisory and investment operations in a region with over 600 staff and a committed portfolio of $20 billion. Previously, he was the Director and Global Head of Manufacturing, Agribusiness, and Services. He also served as Regional Director for East Asia and the Pacific. Earlier, he held also senior managerial positions for the Middle East and North Africa. Prior to joining the WBG in1996, he worked for the French Ministry of Finance and the Banque Nationale de Paris. A Portuguese and French national, he holds degrees from the École Polytechnique, and from the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.

This panel will discuss the future of the energy sector in light of the changes taking place globally. In particular, the panelists will focus on the following 3 areas of interest: • Planning. Planning for the future of energy is vital and is constantly a focus of governments given the implication on shaping the future of countries and achieving their development plans. • Innovation and Technology. There is no doubt that innovation and technology is very important in shaping the future of energy. Disruptive technologies has an important implication on the diversification of future energy sources and requires close cooperation between the government and the private sector as well as the research and development sector. • Climate Change. Future of energy is closely related to global efforts tackling the climate change. Many governments started to take impact on the climate into considerations in developing their future energy plans.
