Bridging The Digital Divide: Access for All

Brief

Ensuring every school and child has access to the internet was at the core of OneWeb Founder Greg Wyler’s talk on ‘Bridging the Digital Divide: Access for All’ on the second day of the 2019 World Government Summit. Early in his career, Wyler decided everything he did going forward had to impact people’s lives. He went to Africa to find out how to help and started connecting schools, giving the first fiber to a home and building the first 3G network in the continent. “You could see the impact on every child’s life,” he noted. “They became much more educated, innovative and empowered to change their communities’ life and their own.” Wyler recently started a Project Connect with UNICEF to map and measure all the schools’ connectivity live. Using satellites, artificial intelligence and data science, over 600,000 schools were mapped so far, with metrics provided for over 120,000. He concluded. “It’s a revolutionary step function change in how we’re going to bring broadband to the world”
